What Is Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to reshape the ears, correct prominent (protruding) ears, and create a more balanced and harmonious appearance with the face.
It is most commonly used to correct protruding ears, but it can also address various ear shape deformities.
Ears that are not proportionate to the face may lead to self-confidence issues in both children and adults. The main goal of otoplasty is to achieve natural-looking, symmetrical ears that are in harmony with facial features.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?

Otoplasty may be suitable for individuals who:

-Are bothered by prominent or protruding ears

-Have insufficient or poorly defined ear folds

-Have asymmetry between the ears

-Experience aesthetic or psychological discomfort due to ear shape

-Are in good general health and have realistic expectations

Ear development is usually completed around the age of 5–6, making the procedure safe for children as well as adults.

Who Is Not Suitable for Otoplasty?

Otoplasty may be postponed or not recommended in the following cases:

-Active ear infections

-Serious systemic or chronic illnesses

-Blood clotting disorders

-Unrealistic expectations about surgical outcomes

A thorough medical evaluation is required before surgery.

How Is Otoplasty Performed?

Otoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age, ear structure, and surgical plan.

During the procedure:

*An incision is made behind the ear to access the cartilage

*The ear cartilage is reshaped using special folding and suturing techniques

*The ear is repositioned closer to the head at a natural angle

At the end of the surgery, the ears are dressed with bandages. The incision is hidden behind the ear and is not visible from the outside.

Recovery After Otoplasty

The recovery process is generally quick and comfortable. It is important to protect the ears from trauma during the first 3 months after surgery.
First Few Days
*Mild pain, swelling, and tenderness may occur

*Discomfort is usually controlled with prescribed pain medication
First 5–7 Days
*Dressings are usually removed shortly after surgery

*Patients can return to daily activities and work
2–4 Weeks
*Swelling significantly decreases

*The new ear shape becomes more noticeable

Will There Be Scarring After Otoplasty?

Incisions are placed behind the ears, making scars well hidden.
Although scars do not completely disappear, they fade over time and become barely noticeable.

Is Otoplasty Safe?

Otoplasty is considered a safe procedure when performed by an experienced surgeon in a properly equipped medical facility.
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks such as infection, bleeding, or healing problems, although these are rare.
